World Athletics President Sebastian Coe Considers Bid for IOC Presidency
Paris, August 11 — Sebastian Coe, the President of World Athletics, has indicated that he may consider running for the presidency of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2025. Current IOC President Thomas Bach has confirmed he will not seek an extension after his term ends, opening the door for new leadership.
During a press conference, Coe expressed his interest in the role, saying, «I’ve always said that if the opportunity arose, I would give it serious thought. Now that the opportunity has arisen, it’s something I need to consider carefully.»
The election for a new IOC president is scheduled for March 2025, at ancient Olympia. The newly elected president will take over in June 2025, marking the end of Bach’s tenure.
Coe highlighted his extensive experience within the Olympic movement, which spans decades. «I’ve been deeply involved in the Olympic movement for most of my life,» Coe stated. «I chaired the 2012 London Olympics and have had the privilege of competing in two Olympic Games.»
While Coe believes his background could be an asset, he acknowledged that there are other qualified candidates who could also be considered. «There are certainly other candidates with strong qualifications,» Coe noted. «The IOC is a diverse and talented body, and it’s important that the membership considers a wide range of qualified individuals.»
At 67, Coe’s age might present a challenge, especially amid discussions about the need for younger leadership within the global organization. Additionally, some of Coe’s decisions as head of World Athletics, such as awarding $50,000 to athletics gold medalists at the Paris Olympics, have drawn criticism from certain figures in the sports community.
Although no IOC member has openly campaigned to succeed Bach yet, several names have been linked to potential bids as the election date draws nearer.
