The NBA’s Moral Dilemma: Business vs. Human Rights

By Stanis Elsborg, Senior Analyst at Play the Game

The NBA, known for championing diversity and social justice, is facing criticism for its recent partnership with Abu Dhabi, part of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). While the league has been vocal about supporting movements like Black Lives Matter and honoring social justice advocates, its collaboration with a nation known for human rights violations raises important questions.

The UAE has a poor record on civil liberties, press freedom, and the treatment of LGBTQ+ individuals and migrant workers. Despite these concerns, the NBA has continued to strengthen its ties with the region, scheduling preseason games and forming multi year partnerships.

This partnership highlights a troubling contradiction between the league’s progressive values and its business interests. As the NBA deepens its global reach, it must be held accountable for the partners it chooses and the messages it sends to fans worldwide.
