USA RETURNS TO HOCKEY GLORY

For the first time in more than 90 years, Team USA stands atop the world in ice hockey.

On Sunday night at Avicii Arena in Stockholm, Sweden, the United States claimed the 2025 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship with a dramatic 1–0 overtime win over Switzerland. It was the first world title for the United States since 1933.

The gold-medal game was defined by grit, discipline, and an unbreakable defensive front. After 60 minutes of scoreless hockey, Tage Thompson broke the deadlock just 2:02 into overtime. He skated from his own blue line and fired a shot from the right faceoff circle that sealed the long-awaited championship.

Goaltender Jeremy Swayman delivered a masterclass between the pipes, recording a 25-save shutout in the final. The Americans dominated the shot count, outshooting Switzerland 40–25 overall and 29–14 in the final 40 minutes plus overtime.

The path to gold was relentless. The U.S. dropped only one game en route to the final — to Switzerland, in fact — but rebounded with commanding wins over Finland (5–2) and Sweden (6–2) in the knockout stage.

Switzerland also entered the final in top form after shutting out both Austria and Denmark. Leonardo Genoni made 39 saves in a stellar effort for Switzerland, but it was Team USA’s structure and determination that proved decisive.

At Athletes for Freedom, we celebrate the perseverance and excellence it takes to win on the global stage. Congratulations to Team USA on a well-earned and historic world championship.
